Monumental Pair of English Giltwood Torcheres w/ Rams Heads, Laurels, & Swags

About the Item

A Monumental Pair of Early Victorian Period English Giltwood Torcheres with Rams Heads, Laurels, and Swags. This pair of carved and giltwood torchères features a neoclassical design with rams’ heads and laurel swags. Each torchère has a circular top with a Greek key frieze and a deep basin-shaped support. The structure is upheld by four vertical supports that connect to a tripod base. The legs are carved with fluting and foliate details, meeting at a central baluster-form support decorated with acanthus leaves. Suspended laurel garlands extend from the rams’ heads, and the tripod base ends in hoof feet on a shaped platform. The gilt finish highlights the carved details. These torchères reflect the early Victorian design and are stylistic of Robert Adam, with stylistic elements found in 18th-century French and Italian furniture. The gilt surface is applied over gesso, following traditional techniques used in decorative arts workshops of the period. The underside to each with impressed plaques numbered 'PA-5803' and 'PA-5803A'. England, Circa: 1830
