About the Item

This pair of late 19th-century column bases likely figured into the grand and imposing surroundings of a Qing-dynasty courtyard, supporting large wooden beams that flanked an entry or walkway. Shaped from solid blocks of sandstone, the column bases have a tiered, square-to-round design and are carved in low relief with intricate detail. The tops have a round, drum-form shape carved with leaf-form lappets and a pattern of raised dots that imitate the nails used to stretch the hide top of an actual drum. A simple ruffle connects each top to an eight-sided pillar, in turn set upon a short, square base. Several of the flat sides are carved in relief with various motifs, including a courtyard landscape, flowers & animals, and ribbon-clad treasures set against geometric meanders. A fantastic example of Qing-dynasty stone sculpture, the pair finds their place today tucked within a lush garden or used indoors as pedestals or side tables. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.

Octagonal motifs are common in Chinese art, due to the auspicious nature of the number eight in traditional culture. The table-like base is carved with a decorative apron of intertwined vines and floral motifs. Tucked amidst garden plantings or placed indoors, this low column...
