About the Item

A very fine pair of Louis XVI Style gilt bronze mounted mahogany pedestals, attributed to Sormani. French, circa 1870. The pedestals are of tapering form with finely chiselled gilt bronze mounts of bell husk swags and scrolling acanthus panels. The high quality of the workmanship and design strongly suggests the work of Paul Sormani. Born in Venice in 1817, Paul Sormani (1817-1877), was a Parisian maker of Fine 'meubles de luxe'. His work was described in the catalogue of the 1867 Exposition Universelle as: 'toute sa production révèle une qualité d'exécution de tout premier ordre' (all of his production reveals a quality of execution all of the first order'). Sormani exhibited at the International Exhibitions in Paris in 1849, 1855, 1867, 1878 and 1900, and in London in 1862, winning numerous medals. Paul Sormani established the firm in 1847 at 7 Cimetière Saint-Nicolas in Paris, moving in 1854 to 114 rue du Temple, and in 1867 to 10 rue Charlot. After his death in 1877 Sormani's son Paul-Charles took over the business that later moved to 134 Boulevard Haussmann. It can be difficult to date Sormani's work, as the firm produced furniture for nearly ninety years. However, when Paul Sormani died in 1877, his wife and son took over the business and from this date onwards pieces are normally signed 'Veuve Sormani & Fils'. Louis XVI Style Mahogany Stands Attributed to François Linke, French, circa 1890
By François Linke
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A fine pair of Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted mahogany stands, firmly attributed to François Linke. This delicate pair of mahogany pedestals or stands each have an inset green onyx top above a frieze mounted with allegorical scenes of music. The frieze contains a pull-out slide and the stands are raised on square section tapering legs headed by musical trophies and united by a shaped stretcher with a flambeau finial. An almost identical Stand, with a green onyx top, typical slender legs and shaped stretcher is illustrated by Christopher Payne in François Linke (1855-1946) 'The Belle Époque of French Furniture', p. 53, pl. 44. It is described as a Stand or gaine and titled by Linke as 'Pedestal Louis XVI acajou et bronzes dorés', index number 56. It was available with or without a slide and a drawer, priced between 400 and 500 francs. A comparable version is also shown as a pencil drawing from Linke's Daybook and illustrated in Payne, p. 474. The ribbon tied musical trophies that head the legs of each stand was a mount frequently used by Linke on a number of different items of furniture including vitrines, commodes and a Bibliothèque Louis XVI...
