A Pair of Satin Wood Indian Columns from Chettinad

About the Item

These monumental Chettinad columns are quintessential architectural features of traditional haveli mansions in the Chettinadu region of Tamil Nadu, India. Crafted from durable satin wood with a subtle sheen, they embody grandeur, intricate design, and the use of high-quality materials characteristic of the Chettiar community's cultural sophistication. These columns feature a broader base that tapers towards the top, designed to support the lofty ceilings typical of Chettinad mansions. The capitals are adorned with serpentine carvings that complement their tapering form, while below, decorative brass fittings add an elegant touch. The granite bases are meticulously carved into lotus motifs, symbolizing purity and enhancing the columns' aesthetic appeal. Perfect for adding a historic and ornamental flair to any architectural or interior design project, these Chettinad columns are a testament to South Indian craftsmanship and heritage.

Carved Teak Indian Temple Column
Located in Chicago, IL
This monumental Indian column once supported part of the entrance or courtyard cloister in a grand mansion. Originally part of a series, this individual column is all that remains. The piece comes in multiple stacked segments, distributing the weight of the original structure from its floral motif capital through its stone plinth. Only one is available. Origin: Rajasthan, India, 19th century. During the colonial period, Indian traders amassed huge fortunes and some of that wealth found its way into mansions and palaces. A hundred or more years later, many (if not most) of these structures are obsolete or the fortunes of their owners have dwindled. Many are in urban areas in which land is very valuable now and aggressively sought for multi-storey buildings. Old single-storey mansions are often disassembled piece-by piece and the parts sold on the international market. India is one of very few countries that have the labor supply to decommission old structures in this meticulous way. The column could be used in an architectural, load-bearing way or as a free-standing decoration...

Rare Pair of 1950's Modern Anglo-Indian Arm Chairs
Located in Chicago, IL
These Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture...
