Pair of solomonic columns. Wood. Spain, circa second half 17th century.

About the Item

Solomonic pair of columns. Carved and gilded wood. Spain, towards the second half of the 17th century. Pair of columns made of carved and gilded wood composed of a simple base with smooth moldings, the Solomonic shaft decorated with branches with vine leaves and bunches of grapes, and a composite capital. The Solomonic column was an element used in the History of Christian Art from time to time, although it was a common architectural motif during the Baroque and, above all, since Bernini used it in the baldachin of Saint Peter's in the Vatican (finished in 1633), moment from which it became popular throughout Europe. It arrives early in Spain: there are examples in Andalusia from around 1639; in Madrid they have been seen since 1636 (it seems that they were used for the first time in the Iglesia del Buen Suceso); and it spreads quickly through peninsular and colonial territories. Although there are known examples decorated with flowers (normally in altarpieces of female cloistered convents) or with birds, the most common typology is the one that uses branches and bunches of grapes as a decorative element along the Solomonic shaft, thus alluding to the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Compare, for example, with the couple preserved in the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, dated in the 18th century; works by José Benito de Churriguera and his family (Churrigueresque); etc. · Size: 36x36x234 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.

  • Pair of Solomonic Columns, Pinewood, 17th Century
    Located in Madrid, ES
Pair of columns of carved pine wood that present the twisted shaft in a helical way (Solomonic) and decorated with interlocks of birds, scrolls, leaves, fruits and birds intermingled and are topped by two Corinthian capitals (with the two levels of leaves under the scrolls more similar to those of oak than to acanthus). Although it was an element used in architecture before, the Solomon column is a more known and habitual piece in the Baroque, especially since its use by Bernini in the canopy of St. Peter's Vatican (completed in 1633). He soon arrived in Spain, being used in Andalusia for the first time circa 1639 and in Madrid in 1636, spreading throughout the peninsula and colonial territories since then. Normally, they were decorated with branches and grape clusters in slight relief. Although the presence of birds in this type of elements is not the most common, they can be seen in pieces such as the Solomonic column...
