Pair of Carved Antique French Solomonic Columns, 17th Century

About the Item

Known as Solomonic columns, this pair of highly decorative architecturals was hand-carved in France during the 1600s. The spiral-shaped columns feature robust twists adorned with equally impressive carvings of flowers on a grapevine. Both of the coils are topped by a Composite Order capital, as noted by the presence of volutes above caulicole (stylized acanthus leaves). They are supported by an octagonal plinth under a molded circular foot, providing stability for the almost six-foot-tall columns with a luxurious and deep chocolate patina. Although the spirals continue on the backside, the carver chooses not to continue the enveloping grapevine, allowing the depth of the twists to gain prominence. Inspired by 2nd BCE marble columns that were mistakenly thought to have been part of Solomon’s First Temple in Jerusalem (hence the term “Solomonic columns”), these fantastically carved French columns would make beautiful architecturals in any home.
