Pair of 18th Century Carved Chestnut Solomonic Column Lamps from Portugal

About the Item

Originally a pair of architecturals, these Solomonic columns have been repurposed into a unique set of lamps. Hand-carved in chestnut wood in Portugal during the 1700’s, the helix-shaped columns are vibrant interpretations of original 2nd century CE marble columns for an ancient Greek temple, erroneously thought to have been Solomon’s First Temple, hence the name “Solomonic columns”. The intricate carvings depict twisting grapevines, with a bird set amongst the foliage at a different location on each column. As is the case with most Solomonic columns, they are topped by Composite order capitals, with Ionic volutes above a Corinthian caulicole of curled acanthus leaves. A contemporary, two inch thick iron base has been added more recently, matching the lovely dark chocolate patina of the original chestnut wood. Our 18th century carved Solomonic columns have been wired for use in American homes and topped with cream colored parchment shades adorned with gold banding embellished with geometric motifs. At over four feet tall (from base to shade), they would make fantastic table lamps for an entry hall, living room, or landing.
