A pair of Victorian marble revolving topped pedestals

A Victorian mahogany collector’s cabinet with a fossil marble top, of rectangular form with a single panelled door opening to reveal 13 drawers, the black marble top set with a large central nautiloid, with the original key. English, circa 1850. Provenance: Lord Rosebery of ‘The Durdans’, Epsom until 1959 thence by descent to the present owner. Footnote: The shell is a nautiloid, rather than an ammonite, most probably Jurassic from the typical matrix rock of the Dorset fossil beds as at Lyme Regis...

A pair of Victorian carved mahogany stools, each of square form with a pierced frieze and raised on scrolling cabriole legs, the drop-in seats upholstered in woven horsehair. English...

The rectangular black marble and pietra dura top is set above a walnut base naturalistically carved with C-scrolls, lilies and foliage on a central lily support with outswept dolphin feet. At the back are two cabriole legs headed by shells and equally ornate carving. The inlaid decoration comprises a central sunburst within a patchwork border of specimen marbles and fossils including: Madrepore, Petworth, Portoro, Brocatelle, Sicilian Jasper and ‘Duke’s Red’. The top of the base is stamped ‘Artist R. Tudsbury Edwinstow. nOTsh.’ circa 1840. Measures: Height 33in, 84cm Width 60in; 152.5 cm Depth 361/2in, 92.5 cm Provenance: Oberton Hall: “The Grecian-black marble top, with its ribbon-banded tablet and polychromed pietre dure compartment is a masterpiece of the Derbyshire Black Marble Works at Ashford and Old Royal Museum, Matlock. It was probably designed by William Adam (d.1873) who succeeded to the Works in 1831. A trade sheet illustration of the Museum featured a related table, where the Museum was noted as being ‘under the Especial Patronage of his Grace [Charles Cavendish, 6th] Duke of Devonshire/Minerals and Shells/Inlaid Tables/Mawe’s Original Royal Museum, Matlock-Bath. This spectacular pair of marble and doré bronze pedestals is hewn from the finest French "Partridge eye" rouge griotte marble from the Languedoc region. Formed as Corinthian columns, these neoclassical pedestals are complete with intricate bronze doré capitals and acanthus and olive leaf bands around the base. Named for the griotte cherry for its deep, rich color, Red Griotte was the favorite marble for Royal apartments in the 18th century and was used to create the fireplace mantel in the office of Louis XIV in Versailles.
