Tripod Column 19th Century Gilded Wood in the Louis XIV Style

About the Item

Important column tripod in carved and richly decorated gilded wood, forming a torch holder, in the Louis XIV style. The triangular shaft is flanked by a decoration of candelabras, fleurons, lambrequins and shells, and supports a circular wooden tray with gadroons. The whole rests on a tripod base with acanthus leaf scrolls. Its tripartite design gives our column a light and slender look. Stand or torchiere holder in gilded wood, molded and carved with shells, scrolls and acanthus leaves on a tripod base. Regency style. It can hold a torchiere or a vase. What is a torchiere? The word torchere is first mentioned, according to Harvard, in the dictionnaire de l'Académie in 1696, but, the author points out, the term had already been in use for more than twenty years.
