A French Louis XIV style 19th century pair of carved marbles pedestals

About the Item

A French 19th century Louis XIV style pair of carved marbles pedestals. The square moulded top and the base are in griotte red marble, the tapering body in Ribbon Campan marble with a moulded part in Fleur de Pêcher. Dimensions: H. 130 cm - W. 44 cm - D. 32 cm (51.18 in x 17.32 in x 12.6 in) The pedestal is ideal for the display of a small-scale sculpture or a decorative vase. The tapered form of the pedestals naturally leads the eye upwards, making them ideal showcases for objects of importance. Since Antiquity the quarries of the area of Campan in the High Pyrenees in France have produced a variety of marbles, the most famous of hard stones being, Ribbon Campan marble, Green Campan, the Campan Grand Mélange and not forgetting the Cherry Red variety called Rouge Griotte. All campan marbles are characterized by deep and clearly marked green veins. They were used extensively in the apartments in Versailles under the reign of Louis XIV for fireplaces, but also wall panels because of the beauty of the motifs in the stone. The main decoration of the walls of the Escalier de la Reine in Versailles (the Queen’s stairs) features Campan Vert and Campan grand Mélange. Fleur de Pêcher marble is a historic marble, used a lot during the 19th century to make exceptional works of art.
