Early 18th Century Italian Carved Giltwood Mirror Depicting Four Seasons

About the Item

Early 18th century richly and profusely carved giltwood mirror depicting personnified allegories of the four seasons. The giltwood frame is made of adjourned wood decorated with flowers and leaves forming acanthus leaves spandrels. The pediment is lavishly carved and adorned with scrolls, foliage and flowers. Four putti depicting four seasons, each one holding its attribute: brazier for winter, bunch of grapes and ewer for autumn, cornucopia and flower crown for spring, sheaf of wheat and wheat crown for summer. Flower garlands coming down on each side of the framing. The high quality of the carving has a complete part as the sculptural work and not just the classical frame setting. The depth of the carving allows all four puttis to stands out as independent carved figures, especially the summer putti crowning the pediment. Mercury mirror. Excellent original condition, original gilt. Northern Italy, early 18th century
