China Giant Scholar Rock Lingbi, Stunning Indoor or Outdoors

About the Item

This is a beautiful tall 49" high example of a Chinese Lingbi viewing stone or scholar rock mounted in a custom hand-carved rosewood base. Provenance: Old Shanghai collection acquired, circa 1998. Lingbi stones are also called 'resonant rocks' (bayinshi). They were sometimes used for making chimes and are thus also known as 'chime rocks'. Lingbi rocks are beautiful and clear-cut, with a frame of soft lines. They are now hard to find as harvesting them is now prohibited. Our giant natural specimen comes from a forty year old private Chinese collection. This specimen would make a perfect garden or entry path installation. We hope to see you there! About Lingbi Rocks. China's most popularly collected style of rock these are found in Lingbi County of Anhui Province, China. They are Fine-grained, delicately textured limestone and lie deep in the red mud of the Qingshi mountains. Naturally shaped, they need no cutting or carving. Depleted after generations of mining, high quality Lingbi are now quite rare. They are very hard. Their mineral composition is such that they produce a metallic, resonant sound when tapped. Hence they are also called 'resonant rocks' (bayinshi). They were sometimes used for making chimes and are thus also known as 'chime rocks'. Lingbi rocks are beautiful and clear-cut, with a frame of soft lines. Combining masculine beauty with antique simplicity, they have been admired by connoisseurs for centuries. In the Northern Song dynasty the emperor poetically inscribed on one of them: "The mountain is high while the moon looks small the water ebbs and the rock juts forth."
