David Cressey and Robert Maxwell Thumbprint Planter for Earthgender - 1970s

About the Item

A vintage hand thrown 'thumbprint' planter in golden ochre glaze by famed American ceramicist duo David Cressey and Robert Maxwell for their collaborative Earthgender line. Signed on base. Earthgender was a short-lived ceramics company founded in the early 1970s in El Segundo, California, by renowned potters Robert Maxwell and David Cressey. Specializing in large-scale, handcrafted stoneware planters, the company produced modern designs featuring incised patterns like "Teardrop Sunburst" and "Thumbprint." Despite high expectations, Earthgender closed in 1974 due to the rising popularity of pre-cast concrete and fiberglass planters and the economic challenges of the mid-1970s, making their beautiful pieces scarce and highly sought after today.
