About the Item

Pair of Medici vases in white Carrara marble, 17th-century Italian manufacture. The Medici vase is a monumental marble krater, carved in Athens by a Neo-Attic workshop around the mid-1st century BCE as a garden ornament. It was part of the antiquities collection of the Villa Medici in Rome, in whose inventories it appears from 1598, but its origin is unknown. In 1780 it was moved to the Uffizi Gallery where it is still displayed today. The vase was widely admired and began to be reproduced in copies of various materials between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to adorn the gardens of important mansions, not only in Italy. This pair of vases comes from an important historic home near Carrara, Tuscany. They are made with the typical pod shape in vogue in the 17th century. They were made entirely by hand, carving a block of marble to the desired shape. If the exterior was finished by smoothing it with special powders, the interior of the vessels still shows the chisel excavation . The vases, as was always the case, adorned the lemon house of a park: thus they have signs of wear and tear typical of exposure to the elements, but their charm and value lies precisely in this beautiful original patina. They also have a small size, which makes them ideal in interior design as well. Measurements H cm 40 Mouth cm 32 Base cm 20 x 20
