Primitive Large Stone Trough Garden Feature Weathered Moss Bonsai Carved Stone

About the Item

This reclaimed 17th-century sedimentary stone trough from Egryn Hall in Gwynedd, Wales, is a remarkable artefact steeped in history. Crafted from local sedimentary stone, its rugged texture and earthy tones reflect the natural materials of its time. The trough features a gently weathered surface, adorned with subtle variations in colour ranging from deep greys to warm browns and greens, showcasing the stone’s age and the elements it has endured. Measuring approximately 1.3 meters in length, the trough features an irregular rectangular shape that adds to its unique character. The edges are uneven, a reflection of the natural stone’s formation and the primitive handcrafting techniques used during its creation. This asymmetry contributes to the trough’s rustic charm and authenticity. Its original purpose, likely for holding water or grain, is suggested by the shallow bowl-like interior which has developed a rich smoothness over centuries of use. The time-worm patina has a rich layer of lichen and moss. The historical significance of the trough is amplified by its provenance, having been unearthed from the grounds of Egryn Hall, a medieval property that once served as a prominent manor in the region. This connection to Egryn Hall adds a layer of intrigue, hinting at the lives and activities that occurred on the estate. Today, this rare piece not only serves as an historical artifact of the period but also as a timeless decorative element, ideal for use in gardens or as a striking internal focal point in rustic or contemporary settings. Its reclaimed status enhances its appeal, making it a sustainable choice for those looking to incorporate history into their spaces. Note that 2x small drainage holes are later additions, these can be retained for use as a planter or could be plugged for use as a birdbath. At time of listing, we have two of these available and will be sold individually. Note that the wood block shown under the stone is not included. An unique opportunity to own a rare and special piece of important architectural history. In the photo of Ergyn Hall from the late 1990s, the stone troughs can be seen in the undergrowth on the right-hand side, midway down the photo. More photos and history of Egryn Hall can be found on the ‘Coflein’ website referenced in the photo and on the National Trust website. About Egryn Hall Egryn Hall, located in Gwynedd, Wales, is a historically significant property that is now managed by the National Trust. A remarkably complete surviving late medieval hall house, retaining virtually all of its original internal carpentry, the quality of detail richly demonstrating its high status. The house also displays an interesting development sequence with good 16th to 17th Century detail associated with its adaptation to storeyed form, and a Victorian wing marking a later concession to changing architectural tastes and spatial requirements. This impressive structure dates back to the medieval period (dendrochronology has given felling dates of 1507-10 for the hall and 1592-1622 for the insertion of the upper floor). Egryn Hall is characterized by its distinctive features, including intricate stonework and large, period windows that provide glimpses into its storied past. The property has been a focal point of local history, serving various functions over the centuries, including as a residence and a gathering place for the gentry. The hall is surrounded by picturesque grounds and set in local farmland which add to its charm and offer visitors a scenic experience. As a National Trust property, Egryn Hall is preserved for public enjoyment and education. The Trust works to maintain its historical integrity while providing opportunities for visitors to stay at the property to explore the estate and learn about its significance in Welsh history. Informative displays highlight the architectural features and the stories of the families who lived there. The property serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Wales, making it a valuable destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
