About the Item

Two late 19th century antique buff terracotta garden urns manufactured by Blanchard. These urns are over 130 years old and despite signs of wear and losses, remain a striking set for a garden, telling the story of 19th century English craftsmanship. The urns are of a matching form with a large scale with gadrooned bases and masks to the sides above a socle base. Blanchard Terracotta Blanchard was one of Britain's leading manufacturers of terracotta during the 19th century. Following an apprenticeship at the Coade factory, Mark Henry Blanchard established his own business in Blackfriar's Road, Lambeth in circa 1840. The firm specialised in statuary pieces, vases, busts and architectural details and even acquired important contracts including a commission from the Victoria and Albert Museum for architectural ornaments. At the Great Exhibition of 1851, Blanchard received a number of awards, inspiring none other than John Marriott Blashfield to set up a competing terracotta business. A pair of mid to late 19th century French terracotta garden urns with cherubs after a design by Claude Ballin (1615-1678). An almost identical depiction in bronze resides in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. This pair were sourced from an estate in Scotland. Each is of a matching design depicting a large, highly decorative urn with lattice border, turned socle and embellishments between twin handles in the form of sulking cherubs above lion faces. Thanks to their impressive scale and aged, ancient look, this pair of antique vases make a magnificent feature in any setting, instilling a space with grandeur and period French opulence. Goldsmith to Louis XIV, Claude Ballin was a talented French goldsmith and metalworker of the 17th century.
