About the Item

This important pair of Villeroy & Boch (at the Mettlach factory) monumental jardinières is the perfect choice for bracketing a doorway or mantel, they are beautiful examples of Aesthetic period pottery. The jardinières have slightly flaring upper rims, long bodies, low squat globular waists and swelling feet. The bodies are painted with Pre-Raphaelite-style paired women standing or seated, framing a woman on a swing. The background is an all-over pattern after William Morris, of pale sage green foliage, painted in a wallpaper effect. The painting is by Warth. The handles are scroll molded to the bodies, with fully-realized white biscuit porcelain putti atop the upper part of the handle. The decoration of the jardinières follows along the lines of similar wares produced ion England at Doulton, with brown bands incised with patterns of blue discs on the handles, and with Egyptian style palmettes to the lower body, with foliate designs in subtle tones of blue, green and pink. Printed and impressed marks to undersides. Size: 23" H. x 33" W. The circumference around the bodies at their widest points is a stunning 66'. Condition: 3" shallow chip to foot glued back on and small losses refilled and over-painted. One angel's toes glued back on and over-painted. One angel's head reattached and over-painted. Comments: The massive size, bold combination of elements and masterful use of imagery suggest that this pair may have been meant to be part of the Villeroy & Boch Stand at the World's Fair (Exposition Universelle) held in Paris in 1889. Monumental jardinières of this size make the perfect decoration for a gracefully-proportioned room. Few pottery objects are large enough to root a room while adding meaningful decoration points. The French Villeroy & Boch factory is the parent of the Mettlach factory. As the factory is on the French-German border, in the prefecture of Luxembourg, Mettlach was alternately considered in France or in Germany depending on territorial line changes after various wars. Mettlach was charged with making output for the growing bourgeoisie, but the factory also produced some very beautiful artistic wares toward the end of the 19th century, no doubt to compete in the international sphere with Doulton, the English factory that had a huge sanitary ware business and an artistic department at Lambeth. This item includes the two jardinières. Estimated weight is 75 pounds per jardinière, meaning for shipping purposes crating is suggested.
