About the Item

An extraordinary Helicoid model M400 staircase by French designer Roger Tallon, 1964. Tallon originally designed this piece for Gallery Lacloche Edition in Paris and it has since become a piece of design history. This iconic staircase features a steel central pole, on which twelve polished cast aluminum paddle shaped steps are affixed in a spiral. The bottom landing step is slightly larger. Each step has a textured circular black rubber inlay and the staircase sits on a landing pad. This piece was designed to be modular; additional steps can be added or removed, allowing it to be easily adjusted for a range of spaces. Our staircase has 12 steps included. The Helicoid staircase exemplifies Tallon’s industrial, playful aesthetic + transforms a functional necessity into a timeless sculptural centerpiece. This piece is in the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York. Unmarked. Sourced in France, 1960s. Roger Tallon (1929-2011) was a French designer and engineer who designed a range of industrial objects, from high-speed trains to machine tools, televisions and domestic furnishings. He helped to modernize the French railroads and played a fundamental role in bringing American-style industrial design to postwar Europe.
