18th Century pair of tritons from a follower of Lambert-Sigisbert ADAM (Nancy, 1700, Paris, 1759). Monumental pair of Neptune and tritons, in Terra- cotta. Suiveur de Lambert-Sigisbert ADAM (Nancy, 1700- Paris, 1759) Nos deux groupes peuvent être rapprochés du travail de l’entourage de Lambert-Sigisbert Adam, dit Adam l’aîné, éminent sculpteur français dont plusieurs œuvres sont conservées au Musée du Louvre. Fils d’un sculpteur nancéen, lambert-Sigisbert Adam arrive à Paris en 1719 et obtient le premier prix de sculpture en 1723. Cette même année, il part pour Rome qui sera pour lui un séjour capital dans sa carrière. Il fut le protégé du Cardinal de Polignac pour qui il restaura des antiques. Il développa son savoir et sa connaissance de l’art antique également au contact des chefs d’œuvre du Bernin qu’il étudia beaucoup. Fasciné par le monde marin, beaucoup de ses œuvres vont être en rapport avec le thème de l’eau et de la mythologie. Citons par exemple les bustes de Neptune et d’Amphitrite conservés au Charlottenburg ou encore un projet pour la fontaine de Trevi. De retour en France en 1733, Adam va poursuivre ses recherches dans ce domaine. Ainsi, il réalisa le décor sculpté de la fontaine du parc de Saint-Cloud. Son chef-d’œuvre demeure le groupe central du Bassin de Neptune à Versailles( 1736-1740) qui sera considéré comme le manifeste du baroque romain en France. En 1737, il est reçu à l’académie avec pour morceau de réception Neptune calmant les flots (Musée du Louvre). Célébré pour ses grandes qualités de sculpteur, Adam travailla pour les plus grandes personnalités du royaume telles le roi louis XV ou Madame de Pompadour. Ses deux frères Nicolas Sébastien (1705- 1778) et François Gaspard (1710- 1761) épousèrent également la carrière de sculpteur. Le premier, fortement influencé par le baroque italien, réalisa de nombreuses œuvres aux thèmes essentiellement religieux. Le second, après deux séjours en Italie fit carrière en Prusse au service de Frédéric II (1747- 1760). L’ainé avait déjà travaillé pour le souverain éclairé mais c’est surtout François Gaspard qui oeuvra pour lui notamment pour le Château de Sans-Souci à Postdam. Ces premières réalisations furent les statues d’Apollon et d’Uranie. On retrouve dans ces deux personnages les mêmes douceurs des traits du visage couronné d’une abondante chevelure bouclée. Il sculpta également le décor de la grande fontaine qui, pour plaire au maître de la Prusse, prit une orientation philosophique. Pour ce faire, François- Gaspard conçut deux œuvres monumentales symbolisant la Terre et le Feu aux côtés des œuvres d’Adam, la Chasse et la Pêche. Ces œuvres témoignent de la grande parenté technique et stylistique qui existait entre les deux frères et leur capacité à traiter les sujets en rapport avec le milieu aquatique. On peut comparer notre statue représentant Neptune avec un Bacchus en marbre daté de 1759 sculpté par François- Gaspard, aujourd’hui dans une collection particulière. Les torses de ses deux personnages sont fortement similaires notamment au niveau du modelé de la ceinture abdominale, du nombril creux légèrement vertical et des pectoraux largement déssinés
