Carved Marble Figure of a Faun, Inspired by the Antique Original
About the Item
A carved marble figure of a faun playing the flute, the figure’s head is tilted to meet the flute in playing position, with left leg crossed in front of the right leg, and with left hip leaning slightly upon an adjacent tree stump, the figure draped with a lion-pelt tied at the right shoulder, on an integral square base, Italian, ca. 1890.
This derives from “The Faun with Pipes”, the 1st-century Roman figure based on a lost bronze Greek original. Owned by the Borghese family it was displayed at the Villa Borghese as early as 1638. Purchased by Napoleon in 1807 it was installed at the Louvre in 1815. Copied widely, it was much admired by later Grand Tour travelers.
