Important German Dog
About the Item
This example is believed to be one of the design inspirations for the generation of cast-iron and zinc dogs that were made in America in later years. This particular model was copied by J.W. Fiske Iron Works and is listed in its 1890 catalogue as "No. 387 New Foundland, 3 ft. 3 ins. high, base 45 ins. long, 19 ins. wide in a painted or bronzed finish". The J.L. Mott catalogue of "Statuary and Animals" of 1890 has a smaller version of this dog, "Plate 90-M Spaniel" at 2 ft. high, base 11 ins. by 2 ft. 5.5 ins. The Mott catalogue identifies the artist as W. Wolff, presumably referring to Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff (1814-1887), a sculptor of animals who worked in Berlin and likely produced the original model for this dog.
Provenance: Collection of Margaret Booth Chern (1905-1975) author of "The Complete Newfoundland".
