Life-size statue of the nymph Amalthée and Zeus' goat

About the Item

An incredible plaster sculpture of the Nymph Amalthée and Zeus's goat. Amalthée is the goat that nurses Zeus as a child, and which Rhea has entrusted to protect him from the jealousy of Chronos. Later, the Goat metamorphoses into a Nymph. We have here an extremely rare example made in the 19th century by an unidentified artist. In the 19th century, few sculptors worked directly on stone or marble... Instead, they were "modelers". They generally used plaster to give shape to a creation straight out of their imagination, then entrusted the carving to specialists. Sculptures are therefore often signed by both the master sculptor and the specialists commissioned to carve them. Plaster modelling enables master sculptors to present their creations at an exhibition and ensure their success before producing the final version in marble, stone or bronze. A distinction is made between " modeling "of a plaster sculpture, which has been created by hand by the master sculptor, from a " molding "in plaster. On the contrary, it requires a pre-existing original model to be molded in order to reproduce it, for example. Our plaster sculpture ofAmalthée and Zeus' goat is an original hand-modelled plaster by an unidentified artist. The use of plaster makes the artist's gestures more apparent, enabling him to accentuate the smallest naturalistic details, thus reinforcing the nymph's human side.

  • Life-Size Terracotta Erato Statue, 1 of 9 from the Apollo Inn, London
    Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
Dating from 1898, this impressive life-size statue of Erato once decorated the façade of the Apollo Inn in Tottenham Court Road, London. Modelled by John Broad for Doulton and Co, this Erato statue stood alongside Apollo and the other 8 muses on the exterior of the Apollo Inn public house from 1898 until the building’s demolition in 1961. Located on the corner of Tottenham Court Road and Torrington Place, London’s Apollo Inn was designed by English architect Charles Fitzroy Doll (1850-1929). When the building was demolished in 1961 for an extension to the Heal’s furniture store – which remains on the site to this day – this statue of Erato along with Apollo and the other 8 Muses were removed. This life-size statue of Erato was sourced from a garden in Chiswick. Known as the Greek goddess of lyric poetry, she is seen as she is often depicted wearing a crown wreath and holding a lyre. Of the other 8 Greek Muses, the whereabouts of 4 is known. Euterpe is located in St George’s Gardens near Kings Cross railway station, presented to the borough by Ambrose Heal of Heal’s London. Clio was reputedly bought by architectural historian, Nikolaus Pevsner, who placed it in his garden in Hampstead. Thalia and Melpomene are both in the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia and appear alongside Apollo in John Davis’s book ‘Antique Garden Ornament...
