Murano Glass Water Fountain

About the Item

An ornate and truly magnificent example of a large Venetian glass, this Murano glass fountain is an incredible rarity. Only the most skilled of craftsmen could have created such a masterpiece, using the most painstaking and time-honored techniques of Murano glassmaking. Displaying a vivid rainbow of glasswork, this desirable work of art exhibits the originality for which Venice, and the island of Murano, became world-famous. Attributed to the studio of Gino Cenedese, this rare piece is formed of glass that has been entirely handworked, making each figure and flower a truly unique objet d'art. Four glass maidens, each representing one of the Four Seasons, encircle the basin, while a sumptuous garden of delicate flowers spouts a Cascade of water at their feet. The basin sits atop an elaborate pedestal crafted entirely of cordonato d'oro, or "creased gold" glass, which contains flecks of gold leaf for a dazzling effect. Amazingly, Venetian glass has been made for the last 900 years, primarily on the small island of Murano. The art was brought to the area by Byzantine craftsmen, who came from Constantinople after it was overrun by crusaders in the Middle Ages. A Venetian guild was soon formed to establish and enforce strict regulations, including the confidentiality of trade secrets. By the 16th century, Venetian glass artisans had acquired tremendous control over the color and transparency of their glass, and had mastered innumerable decorative techniques. They occupied an extremely high position in Venetian society and became known throughout the world for their marvelous and unparalleled creations, which they continue to create to this day, circa 1940.
