About the Item

These two busts, monumental in both their size and artistry, come from the renowned Italian majolica workshop of the famed Angelo Minghetti. Depicted are the Renaissance political and cultural leaders Marquess and Marchioness of Mantua, Francesco II Gonzaga and Isabella d'Este. The portraits achieve remarkable naturalism, and each bust displays elaborate hand-painted decoration. Nineteenth-century majolica is coveted for its intricate motifs and deep saturation of color, both qualities that distinguish these busts. Francesco II Gonzaga and his wife Isabella d'Este were powerful political leaders in the Northern Italian city of Mantua in the 15th century, and Isabella was an important humanitarian and patron of the arts. When her husband was captured as a prisoner of war in 1509, she served as regent of Mantua during his absence and became a successful military leader and diplomat. Known as the “First Lady of the Renaissance,” she was well-educated and fashionable, and she supported some of the most notable artists of the era, including da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Giorgione and many more. Some scholars have even speculated that she could be the sitter for the Mona Lisa. Angelo Minghetti studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna before founding his own ceramic workshop in Bologna in 1858, where he endeavored to recapture the art of 15th and 16th-century Italian majolica, particularly the Urbino ware. He is best known for his elaborately decorated majolica busts depicting Renaissance figures like the present pair. He found inspiration in the great terracotta sculptors of the Renaissance, such as Luca della Robbia and his colorful tin-glazed earthenware. Beginning in 1869, Minghetti began exhibiting at the grand Universal Exhibitions of the late 19th century, including the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair, the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1878 and the 1883 National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rome, among others. He was awarded several medals at these exhibitions, and his works were commended for their execution and decoration, which very closely resembled authentic Renaissance earthenware pieces. Today, the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) holds in its collection several majolica busts by Minghetti, and a majolica plaque by Minghetti resides in Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum. Signed “A.M.” Circa 1880 Each 27 1/4" wide x 13 1/2" deep x 38 1/8" high.

Terracotta Bust of King Louis XV After Lemoyne
Located in New Orleans, LA
Presenting a regal yet approachable portrait of France’s Louis XV, this terracotta bust is modeled after Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne’s sculpture of the king executed in 1757, which now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This version is executed in meticulous detail, with the king donning his cuirass decorated with the cross of the Holy Ghost and a draper tied under his tie. His head is turned slightly, giving the portrait a more casual, realistic feel, yet there is no mistaking his position of power in this confident portrayal. Louis XV, also called “Louis the Beloved,” ruled as King of France from September 1, 1715 until his death in 1774, succeeding his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. Until the young Louis...

Russian Malachite and Pietre Dure Plinths
Located in New Orleans, LA
The exquisite art of pietre dure is at its absolute finest in this spectacular pair of Russian ormolu and malachite plinths. True works of art of the Restauration period, these plinths each feature a matching pietre dure mosaic crafted of the finest stones, all chosen to create a sense of depth and dimensionality in the final work. Depicting an onyx vase with tulips, roses, daffodils, magnolia and other flowers, these pietre dure panels are among the finest examples of this ancient art we have seen. The pietre dure is complemented by malachite panels of the highest quality, exhibiting exceptional depth through its extraordinary cellular structure. Malachite is one of Russia’s most precious stones, and its presence in these plinths indicates commission and ownership by an individual of considerable status. Mounted in an excellent stepped ormolu base, these plinths originally served as bases for vases or candelabra. The overall execution and appearance of these plinths is very characteristic of the taste associated with the immensely wealthy collector Nicolas Demidoff. As early as 1806, Demidoff had commissioned the Parisian goldsmith Henri August to supply a guéridon; in 1819, he ordered famed French bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire to supply mounts for a massive malachite vase (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), as well as a console table with legs in the form of Nike. Other commissions included a table given as a gift to Grand Duke Leopoldo II of Florence, now in the Pitti Palace. Demidoff eventually settled in Florence in 1822 and became Russian minister to the Tuscan Court. Elevated to the rank of Count of San Donato by the Grand Duke, he built a magnificent villa at San Donato on the site of lands formerly owned by the Medici. The villa was later inherited by Anatole, his son, Prince of San Donato, and there are records which confirm transactions he had with the Opificio delle Pietre Dure. The 19th century proved to be the golden age of Russian malachite. The stone became a sign of prestige and a token of wealth, so much so that Russian papers of the time wrote: "To afford having a big piece wrought in malachite is synonymous to owning diamonds." Year after year the Russian (Romanov) treasury paid increasingly unreasonable prices to hoard the best malachite, much of which went into Romanov palaces and extravagant objets d'art. The Hermitage Museum possesses a collection of over two hundred examples of this “palatial” malachite...

French Figural Statue
By Mathurin Moreau
Located in New Orleans, LA
This extraordinary and monumental cast-iron sculpture was likely specially commissioned to the Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne for an important public or private collection. Designed by celebrated Parisian sculptor Mathurin Moreau, the striking work takes the form of a beautiful young maiden clad in classical robes with an amphora gracefully held aloft in one hand. The work displays a remarkable level of detail considering its iron casting, including a wreath of laurel leaves atop the woman's head and a stunning necklace adorning her neck. Due to its large size and subject matter, the remarkable work would most probably have been exhibited in a public or private fountain, garden, estate or hotel. French cast-iron sculptures such as this one were historically preferred over bronze for outdoor decorations...
