About the Item

A striking and high quality true pair of French 19th century Ormolu and Verde Antico marble statues of The Intervention of the Sabines. Each handsome statue is raised on its original rectangular Verde Antico marble plinth above an Ormolu base plate. The statues showcase a moment from the early Roman legend, after the abduction of the Sabine women by the Romans. Based on the painting by renowned French painter Jacques-Louis David, this climactic scene depicts Romulus, Rome's Founder poised for battled with the Sabine leader Titus Tatius. In the painting, the women—now wives and mothers—intervene to stop the bloodshed between their fathers and new husbands. Hersilia, the now wife of Romulus, and daughter of Titus Tatius is shown heroically stepping between the warring sides.
