About the Item

An exceptional and monumentally scaled pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. White Carrara Marble urns, signed D. Epinay, Charles Adrien Prosper. Each stunning lidded urn is raised on a square carved base with a scalloped edges and flowers at each corner leading to the socle displaying a spiral reeded design below a half round band. The base of each urn is wrapped with large acanthus leaves below scrolled flowing ribbons. On each side of each urns are central medallions set within a mottled frame, with the first showcasing a classical maiden holding a tambourine in one hand and a thyrsus in the other. She is seated on a blanket of fur with her young infant in a prairie like setting. The second scene is of the same maiden playing with her infant while Pan is watching over in the garden. The third is of the maiden wearing her classical dress blowing in the wind and tapping on her tambourine, while the infant has her hands up while dancing. The forth is of the maiden helping her young infant up to her while wearing a classical dress continuing to blow in the wind. Above each medallion is a decorative carved bow which is flanked by exceptional and richly detailed rams heads with their curved horns. From the rams mouth are two swaging floral garlands which flank each medallion. The neck of the urns display scrolled floral designs all below the egg and dart designed rim. Above is the removable lid with acanthus leaves and a top pineapple like finial. A similar pair of urns by d'Epinay are displayed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
