Ban Chiang (Thailand) Pottery
About the Item
This pot forms part of a larger collection currently showing in Guinevere's latest exhibition. The pottery comes from different parts of what is now modern Thailand; Ban Chiang in the Northwest and Lop Buri in the centre. Those from Ban Chiang are between 2000 and 4500 years old and those from Lop Buri are 2000- 2500 years old.
Excavations started in the Ban Chiang area in 1967 and in 1992 it became an UNESCO world heritage site. The collection showing at Guinevere, however, has mostly been recovered from current agricultural areas. With farmers using more mechanised farming techniques, ploughing is going deeper than before and more fragments are being unearthed. Usually farmers would just plough the shards back into the ground, but for financial reward they will now collect them. The pottery is of course fragmentary when found and then faithfully restored to the original form.
