About the Item

19th Century French vineyard grape hod hotte bucket wine vineyard tole painted. Direct from France, a wonderful antique metal grape hod or “hotte”, with stunning hand painted French designed artwork. In the 19th century French vineyards, these hods were worn on the backs of grape pickers as they were working the fields, hand harvesting the grapes. The hotte/basket was later hand-painted with colorful stenciled inscriptions of the "Chateauneuf-du-Pape logo with Saint Peter's keys and papal tiara. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a French vineyard located around the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhône wine region in south eastern France. The galvanized metal hod also has remnants of the original leather straps on the back, and a lovely, oxidized old patina, c1890. Excellent attention to details by the artist, original construction, classic French style and a sophisticated, relevant addition to today’s home, from hanging on a kitchen wall, filled with dry flowers…to standing in the foyer as an umbrella stand…decorating an outside patio table…and, of course, in a dining room or wine cellar!! Measurements: 24.5”height. x 24” x 15”. Note: All of our antiques are direct from Europe.
