19th Century, Large Open Sided French Boulangerie Baguette Basket

About the Item

A hard to find open-sided 19th century French boulangerie baguette basket, circa early 1900s. This semi-circle willow basket with a lovely aged patina was used to showcase freshly baked baguettes in a French boulangerie. Wooden slat bottom runners for extra support. A wonderful French Country accent for your home that can also function as an umbrella stand. Bread has always had a special status in France and boulangeries are as common in France as a corner shop in England. There are various local types of bread specific to different parts of France, and no two bakers are the same. More than 320 baguettes are produced every second in France, amounting to over 10 billion per year. Roughly 97% of French families purchase and consume bread daily and 99.8% of the French population lives less than a 15 minute drive from a boulangerie or pâtisserie.
