Antique Covered Nantucket Lightship Basket by A.D. Williams

About the Item

Rare antique covered Nantucket Lightship basket by A.D. Williams (1867-1927) circa 1900. Covered Nantucket Lightship baskets are some of the rarest examples and highly sought after by collectors. This one was made on an 10-1/2" diameter mold. Features a turned lid knob, brass hinge, ears, and shaped swing handle. Fantastic dark patina and overall condition. Measures 9-3/4" high (14" high with handle) by 12" diameter overall. Ex. estate of Paul & Diane Madden. Arthur D. Williams learned how to make Nantucket baskets from William D. Appleton and later taught Ferdinand Sylvaro. He made and sold baskets from his home at 120 Orange Street on Nantucket. He made open and covered baskets and was known for his carved and formed handles.
