This is an antique Provençal grain hopper. A French, fruitwood country house storage bin, linen basket or occasional chair, dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1850.
Distinctive tapering oval form with delightful craftsmanship
Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order
Fruitwood stocks present fine grain interest and warm biscuit hues
Pleasingly clean interior well suited for use as a blanket box
Wide oval lid, with low back rest offers a reassuring occasional seat
Adorned with a shield shaped back rest with inset oval grasp
Dressed with a circular brass escutcheon with inset lock — in working order, key present
This is a superb antique Provençal grain hopper, with a fascinating tapered form and of excellent craftsmanship. Versatile and attractive, well suited to a country house setting. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.
