Chinese Woven Measure Basket, circa 1800

About the Item

Basket making is an ancient and humble craft, but in the hands of a skilled weaver a simple willow basket can become a truly beautiful work of art. This basket was made in China long ago, and the artisan’s mastery is evident, having been passed down from generation to generation. The flexible willow strips are skillfully interlaced with twine cording to form a simple, oblong base and the rim is finished with tightly coiled reeds for a rounded lip. A layer of fabric is adhered to the underside to reinforce the base. Worn from time and use, the basket remains in wonderful condition with only minor losses and has developed an antique patina that only time can achieve. Additional Dimensions: Diameter Opening: 9"
