About the Item
Place this large, colorful antique stand at your front door or in your mudroom to collect umbrellas, canes or other accessories. Created in England, circa 1930, the iron bucket with top and back handle is decorated with a hand painted coat of arms featuring a pair of proud standing lions holding swords and a shield with red chevrons and dots, and topped with a crowned lion. Below the shield, the motto "Fides invicta triumphat".
"Fides invicta triumphat", a Latin phrase that translates to "unconquered faith triumphs" is the motto of the City of Gloucester, and appears on the badge of the Mayor of Gloucester. The motto is a reference to the city's successful defense against a royalist siege in 1643. The phrase is also featured on the city's coat of arms, which includes a crest of a lion in a castle, a pair of lion supporters, and an untitled helmet. The city's coat of arms is known as the "Commonwealth coat" because it was granted to the city in 1652 during the Commonwealth period. In ancient Roman religion, fides was a key concept in understanding relationships, and was associated with loyalty, reliability, and commitment.
The bucket is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns rich and bright hand painted colors with gilt accents. The bucket could also be used to hold wood burning wood next to a fireplace.
