Japanese Susutake Bamboo Ikebana Basket with Textured Handle
About the Item
Vintage ikebana basket, or hanakago, features complex weave on the body and rounded handle with textured elements. The body is plaited of darkened with smoke brown bamboo fibers in chevron pattern, with intricate detailing added in the weave; textured braided elements are applied over the main weave, adding even more texture and visual interest. The basket has a rectangular base that tapers to a rounded oval shaped opening; the high, arched handle juxtaposes the low form of the basket, guiding the eye along the lines of the piece. Smoke coloring adds subtle color variations to the minimal color palette of the piece, with colors shifting from darker, almost espresso brow, to softer mocha and chocolate brown.
The basket measures 3,75" high without handle with approximately 7.5" by 5.75" opening.
Obvious hand-made qualities and natural color palette add Organic Modern influence to the basket, making it a great addition to a shelf or table decor in various styles of interiors, from Traditional to Contemporary, Modern Country, Collected, Transitional, Coastal, or Modernist. It can be used as a decor piece, as a storage container, or as an ikebana basket.

Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. Japanese Bamboo Basket Ikebana Suzuki Gengensai
By Suzuki Gengensai
Located in Atlanta, GA
An elegantly woven bamboo basket with handle as an ikenana container by Suzuki Gengensai (1891-1950) circa 1923-50. Suzuki Gengensai was from Kansai region and active in Osaka. He studied bamboo art under Yamashita Kochikusai (1876-1947) and became an independent artist in 1913. He received his artist name Gengensai in 1914 and in 1923 he changed the characters to Gen, a slight written variation of the character. This basket was signed in this later variation, which helps to date the piece to post 1923.
The basket is woven entirely in a free style irregular plating on the body and with a twisted bundled handle. The surface is lacquered in a deep reddish color. The seemingly less rigid technique renders the piece a more rustic and natural aesthetic that is more suitable for certain occasions. It is singed on the base with artist's signature in the variation post 1923.
A very similar basket of the irregular weaving but without the handle is illustrated in plate 72 in "Baskets Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art...
