Minton Cherub Tazza Comport

About the Item

This is an impressive and spectacular tazza or comport made by Minton in the Victorian period about 1880. The tazza is made up of a reticulated bowl, spine and a base. The Minton's famous parian porcelain produced this tazza which is smooth and beautifully modelled and is decorated mostly in burgundy and gilt. The top part of the tazza consists of a reticulated and pierced bowl in the form of a woven basket, glazed inside in white with burgundy or maroon and gilt on the outside and on the base. The bowl sits on a vine of grapes and its leaf which continues around and rests just above the heads of the cherubs. The stem or spine of the tazza is surrounded by three unglazed white Parian cherubs scantily clad standing on the base decorated in flowers wheat. The base which features branches of buds stands on three legs turned outwardly but the ends of the legs are curled inwards. This item is unmarked, which is not uncommon for the period, but we know that this tazza was part of a bigger service and most likely the plates or other pieces were marked. This design was introduced around 1880. Minton was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Ridgway, Coalport and others. They were located in Staffordshire and were known specifically for their wonderfully fine white bone china. Minton produced the finest British porcelain, often thanks to the fact that they sourced some of their best artists from the French Sèvres factory. Minton supplied huge quantities of tablewares, tiles, and other items to the USA in the 19th Century. The White House was traditionally supplied with Minton porcelian and many great buildings of of this period were decorated with Minton tiles. This tazza would make a fabulous display on your table or mantelpiece filled with fruits or sweets.
