Nantucket Basket by A.D. Williams (1867 - 1927), circa 1890

About the Item

Antique Nantucket Basket by A.D. Williams (Nantucket: 1867 - 1927), circa 1890, an oval open Nantucket basket with cane weave on oak staves, with his distinctive carved swing handle attached to round brass ear extending beyond end of handle and inserting along stave, with oak bottom plate retaining two illegible paper labels on the bottom. A.D. Williams had his basket shop at 120 Orange Street. He learned his craft from William Appleton, a renowned basket maker who served aboard the South Shoals Lightship and is credited with pioneering the oval form (much more difficult to make than the uniform round basket). This background is likely why Williams also specialized in oval baskets. While the quality of Williams' work can vary, this sweet oval basket is among his finest. It remains in excellent original condition, and has developed a fine deep honey color and patina. Measures: 5-1/2 in H x 10-3/8 in L x 7-3/4 in W.
