About the Item
Antique Nantucket Lightship Basket by Davis Hall (1828 - 1906), circa 1880, made aboard the South Shoals Lightship. A shallow round open cane woven basket with oak staves, slender shaped handle with lollipop ends, turned bottom plate with two concentric scribed circles, retaining its original paper label inscribed "Made By Davis Hall, Nantucket, Mass."
The basket is in excellent condition with wonderful warm color and lovely patina.
Davis Hall was born in Hanson, Massachusetts, to Davis Hall Sr. and Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Gould. He never knew his father, a mariner who died around the time Davis Jr. was born. His mother Betsy re-turned to Barnstable County, eventually marrying another mariner, Joseph D. Patterson, in 1840. Sometime in the 1840s the family moved to Nantucket.
At age 21, Hall was one of the seven men who sailed the 44-ton fishing schooner Mary and Emma to California, making a passage of 150 days and becoming the smallest vessel to sail around Cape Horn to during the Gold Rush. Returning to Nantucket, Hall, married Lydia Gifford in 1853. He worked for the Life-saving Service, and his name is mentioned in the reward lists for several rescues between 1852 and 1860. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and was wounded in battle. He used the money he received from his war service and disability to purchase the house on 28 North Water Street for his growing family. In 1877, he was appointed to the crew of the South Shoal Lightship, where he learned basket making. His career is outlined in the U.S. Census, where he is listed as “mariner” (1850), “fisherman” (1860), “seaman” (1870), “on Light-Ship” (1880), and finally as “basket maker” (1900). Today, Davis Hall baskets are prized by collectors, among whom he is known for developing an oval form of lightship basket. (Biography quoted from the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum).

- 19th Century Nest of Three Nantucket Lightship BasketsLocated in Nantucket, MA19th Century Nest of Three Nantucket Lightship Baskets, circa 1880, a graduated set of three round, open baskets having cane weave on rattan staves, a carved swing handle with an elongated ovoid lozenge end connected to tin ears that extend down inside the weave for about a quarter length of a stave, and hardwood bottom plate, likely maple, that is slightly convex and scribed with three concentric rings, The baskets are not signed but are clearly all made by the same hand. The style of the handle with a lozenge end is very similar to that carved by Charles Ray, Capt. Thomas James, William Appleton and circle aboard the South Shoals Lightship, and continued in a more exaggerated manner ashore by A.D. Williams, Ferdinand Sylvaro and especially Mitchy Ray. The handle here has a more slender and elegant profile more akin to the work of Capt. James, suggesting that this nest was likely made by a sailor serving aboard the lightship during James' tenure. All three baskets remain in very good, strong condition, and enjoy a deep patina nicely darkened with age. Unlike most nests which really seem to be more of an assemblage gathered together after the fact, these three baskets nest together nicely with a uniform gradation in size, a feature exemplified by the perfect graduated profile of their handles.
