Rare Worcester Chestnut Basket with Provenance, circa 1770

About the Item

This is a rare pierced basket with applied flowers and leaves, made by Worcester circa 1770 in their 1st or "Dr Wall" period. This basket has a rich provenance of well-known Worcester collectors: it was part of the Sir Jeremy Lever Collection up to 2008, at which point it was acquired by the Robert and Celia Morris Collection. You could be the next collector to look after this beautiful item. Worcester was one of the first potteries in Britain to create items in porcelain. Alongside other great potteries such as Derby, Chelsea and Bow, they pioneered a new industry that would grow out to be huge in the following century. The porcelain used is characteristic for the period; it has a slightly cream/grey hue as it contains no or very little bone ash. It has a very particular sound when tapped, which is unique for items of this period. The basket has many spectacular features; its walls are pierced and shaped like a woven basket, with flower details applied all over it. The handles are realistically shaped like bent twigs including the blemishes that twigs usually have. The bottom of the basket is painted with a stunning polychrome flower bouquet full of roses, hollyhocks, ranunculus, gerberas and other flowers. This is an opportunity to own a rare item by one of the great potters from the 18th Century, and needless to say it is very rare to find one that has no significant damage or wear and no repairs at all. Condition report: The basket is in excellent antique condition. There is very minor loss to some of the flower petals, and there is a bit of rubbing to the enamels on the handles, both of which can be seen in the pictures. Other than this, there is no damage or wear and there are no repairs. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
