Wiener Werkstatte Secessionist Brass Mounted Metal Basket Josef Hoffmann

About the Item

A very stylish Austrian brass mounted metal basket attributed to renowned design Josef Hoffmann (Austro-Hungarian, 1870-1956) and believed to have been made in the early establishment of the Wiener Werkstatte around 1903. The basket is made from a pressed tin like metal with squared ends and rounded sides and rests on brass metal feet forming part of the handle and applied to either side of the basket. The basket has the typical pierced square design as so commonly associated with the work of Hoffmann and has a green velvet liner applied to the inside of the basket. The basket does not appear to be marked and certainly not uncommon particularly for some of the earlier works produced. A very stylish piece and a wonderful display item. Provenance: Acquired from the British Art Market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
