About the Item
Vintage Philippine Folk Art open basket features elongated cylindrical body and prominent handle. The body is plaited in tight weave in simple pattern; the fibers are darkened with smoke. Smoke coloring adds subtle color variations to the minimal color palette of the piece, with colors shifting from darker chocolate brown, to softer mocha and cappuccino brown.
For centuries, basketry formed an essential part of all aspects of daily life on Philippine islands. Traditionally, baskets are made of bamboo, rattan, or a combination of the two. The most frequently utilized construction technique entails plaiting, although wickerwork, twining, or coiling are also employed. Typically in plaiting, two elements are woven over and under each other at a right angle.
The basket is marked with "Made in Philippines" paper sticker; it is in good vintage condition with some age-appropriate loss of smoke coloring on the body of the basket that adds to the vintage charm of the piece and emphasizes organic, natural color variations of the weave. Obvious hand-made qualities and natural color palette add Organic Modern influence to the basket, making it a great addition to a shelf or table decor in various styles of interiors, from Traditional to Contemporary, Modern Country, Collected, Transitional, Coastal, or Modernist. It can be used as a decor piece, as a storage container, or as an ikebana basket.
