About the Item

Large 17th Century Hispano-Moresque Lusterware Pottery Charger. The charger features a deep rounded form with a rich terracotta glaze over a cream background. The central design radiates with a stylized foliage or palm motif, delicately hand-painted in a coppery-brown luster. The rim is encircled by a band of pseudo-Arabic script and scrolling ornament, typical of Islamic-influenced Iberian ceramics. Originating from Spain, this charger reflects the fusion of Moorish and Spanish artistry that flourished from the late medieval through the early modern period. This piece exemplifies the enduring Moorish aesthetic in post-Reconquista Spain, where intricate calligraphic and vegetal designs were prized for their refined geometry and subtle brilliance.
