18th Century antique primitive wooden measure box dated 1784

About the Item

A 18th Century Swedish Measure Box dated 1784 & Owner marked AHB BAS Measures, spatial measures, of wood for dry goods such as grain. Also called target vessel. The dimension is cubic with the upper side open. The corners are joined by sinking in a so-called dovetail. For a long time, even in the 19th century and into the 20th century, the tax was usually paid in grain or other products and it was then important that measures and scales were standardized and controlled. In 1879, the metric system was introduced in Sweden and it also included space measurements. Sweden was divided into adjustment districts. The adjuster, employed by a government agency, would check within his district that weight and measuring instruments met the standard. Approved tools were stamped with special stamps. Wooden measures, so-called caps, which were used to measure dry goods The old space measures jug and cubic inch etc. were replaced by litres, deciliters and centiliters in 1879. The two systems then functioned in parallel for ten years.
