1958 "Putrella" Bowl / Centrepiece by Enzo Mari

$4,000

About

In 1958, the highly experimental Italian designer Enzo Mari created a family of vessels made from a surprising material. "Putrella" is Italian for girder, and these bowls were all made from cut and welded sections of steel girder stock, as used in the construction of tall buildings. The use of a raw industrial material for a luxury object represented an ironic and provocative juxtaposition, and the "Putrella" bowls were instantly celebrated as being at the cutting edge of avant-garde Italian design. Mari designed many sophisticated objects for children, and his sense of humor and playfulness tempers the severity of every "Putrella" bowl's austere lines. This is minimalist sculpture before minimalism, anticipating in a very real sense the work of Donald Judd. The particular "Putrella" offered here was produced in only very tiny numbers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Made of raw steel with matt transparent varnish. Signed with a metal disk affixed to the underside of the vessel.
