About the Item

A set of three raku-fired studio pottery pieces, handcrafted in the UK circa 1980s—a visually striking collection of colourful pottery blending modernism with ancient Japanese firing techniques. The set includes a small bowl (possibly for sake), a large wide-rimmed bowl, and a tall, rectangular vase, each adorned with a geometric arrangement of richly saturated glazes. Bold tones of green, coral red, and petrol blue are complemented by lighter hues, creating a sense of luminosity. The vivid colours are highlighted with a metallic copper glaze that accentuates each piece's rim, while the exteriors of both bowls are glazed in a rich deep brown. The measurements of each piece are as follows: The Small sake bowl measures 11.5 cm in diameter and 7.5cm tall. The large Wide lipped bowl measures: 24 cm in diameter and 7 cm tall The tall and thin rectangular modernist vase measures: 14 cm in length with a depth of 4.5 cm and a height of 16.5 cm Although modernist and graphic in form, this set presents a softened, more organic interpretation of modernism—a subtle blurring of each shape through the merging of glazes, enhanced by the textured craquelure from the raku firing and the warmth of the hand-applied copper glaze. Each of the pottery pieces is unsigned and in good condition, with the large bowl showing some signs of age-related wear on the interior glaze

Vallauris Ceramic Poker Ashtray Set, Green Glazed with Gilt, France, 1960s
By Vallauris
Located in Glasgow, GB
This rare set of four handcrafted ceramic ashtrays by Vallauris is a striking example of mid-century French design, playfully inspired by the world of poker. Each ashtray is uniquely shaped to represent a card suit—spade, club, diamond, and ace—creating a cohesive yet distinctive collection. The deep malachite-green glaze lends a rich, almost jewel-like quality to the pieces, further accentuated by the bold gold gilt borders that highlight the shape of each piece. Housed in their original faux lizard-skin presentation box, these ashtrays have been well preserved. The glaze remains glossy and deep, with no apparent signs of ash residue, suggesting they were rarely, if ever, used for their intended purpose. The gold detailing exhibits some minor surface wear, but it retains its brightness, adding to the vintage charm. Measuring approximately 8 cm in length and width, with a height of 3 cm, each piece is perfectly sized for tabletop display. While originally designed as ashtrays, their sculptural forms and opulent finish make them equally suited for use as decorative objects or small trinket dishes...

Studio Pottery Terracotta Lamp Base by Graeme James, Chipping Campden c. 1980s
Located in Glasgow, GB
A distinctive example of British studio pottery lighting from the 1980s, this handmade ceramic table lamp was crafted by Graeme James in his Chipping Campden workshop. The base combines terracotta and stoneware, executed using the traditional wax resist technique—a process where wax is applied by hand before glazing. As the glaze resists the waxed areas during firing, it reveals expressive brushstrokes and exposes the raw terracotta beneath, producing a multi-layered, highly tactile surface. This vintage pottery lamp...
