19th C English Sterling Greco-Roman & Cut Glass Centerpiece/Tazza by S. Smith
Hallmarked numerous times for London, 1866 by Stephen Smith Known as important nineteenth-century London silversmith.
A stunning 19th-century English sterling Greco-Roman and cut glass centerpiece/tazza an early and significant work by the renowned silversmith Stephen Smith of London in 1866. Smith, a prominent figure in the 19th-century London silversmithing scene, registered his mark in January 1865 at his workshop on 35 King Street, Covent Garden.
This exquisite piece features a removable circular cut and engraved glass bowl that elegantly rests on a highly detailed Roman-inspired sterling silver pedestal. The pedestal showcases intricate pierced foliate motifs, adorned with walking lions, medallion masks, and is supported by three caryatid legs with bull's head motifs and hoofed feet. These elements are joined by a central descending serpent, all resting on a tripartite tiered base. The total weight of this masterpiece is 26.7 ounces.
The centerpiece stands at 10 inches in height, including the 7-inch diameter crystal bowl.
