About the Item

Kelly Dunn (American, b. 1950s) Pair of Studio Turned Vessels, circa 2003 Norfolk Island Pine, each signed and dated A striking pair of turned vessels by acclaimed Hawai‘i-based woodturner Kelly Dunn, each crafted from richly figured Norfolk Island pine. The works exhibit Dunn’s signature attention to form and grain, with highly polished surfaces accentuating the natural knots, spalting, and warm golden hues characteristic of this exotic wood. The distinctive forms—one slightly ovoid, the other squat and rounded—highlight Dunn’s sensitivity to balance and organic variation. Both pieces are incised on the underside: One reads: “Kelly Dunn / Norfolk Pine / 2003” The other: “Kelly Dunn / Big Island / Norfolk Pine / 2003” Dimensions: Taller vessel: 8.5 in. H x 7 in. W Shorter vessel: 7.5 in. H x 8 in. W Condition: Good. Minor adhesive residue to one base; natural inclusions and knotwork are inherent to the material. Overall, surfaces are finely finished and well preserved. Provenance: A Private Collection: East Hampton, NY About the Artist: Kelly Dunn is a master woodturner known for his finely crafted vessels, often made from native Hawaiian woods such as koa, mango, and Norfolk pine. Based on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Dunn has been a professional woodturner since the early 1980s. His work reflects a reverence for natural materials and a meticulous, meditative approach to form. Dunn’s pieces are held in collections worldwide and have been featured in exhibitions focused on contemporary studio craft and wood artistry.

Mid 20th C. Kutani Style French Porcelain Lidded Ginger Jars - A Pair
By Porcelaine de Paris
Located in Morristown, NJ
20th c., a pair of Japanese Kutani style porcelain lidded jars, stamped on Porcelaine de Paris underside of foot. The mark indicates the piece was produced in the 1970's. The jars are decorated in deep orange, tangerine and gold motifs on a white background. On one side, both jars have matching decoration depicting a scroll showing a pastoral scene. On the other side, each jar has a seperate floral depiction; one including bamboo. Both are highly decorative. Founded 1773 by Jean-Baptiste Locre, Porcelaine de Paris, was one of the first manufactures to use the Chinese secret of porcelain. It immediately aimed for the luxury trade, selling to the Royal Courts of Europe. After surviving the French Revolution, Porcelaine de Paris steadily produced tableware as well as purely decorative pieces, receiving orders from all over Europe. Productivity was astonishing, creating one new model every day over 30 years! Around 1830, Jean-Marx Clauss, a German-born potter bought a building at Rue de la Pierre-Levee, where he took over Locre's activity. M. Achille Bloch...
