20th Century Sterling Silver and Enamel Bowl by Jacob Tostrup, Circa 1955-60

About the Item

A stunning 20th century sterling silver and enamel bowl by Jacob Tostrup Date Circa 1955-60. This piece is a great example of quality, as with all Tostrup pieces. The bowl has a good gauge of sterling silver and the muted green enamel with under decoration complement each other and set the piece apart. The enamel is in excellent condition with very little ware. We have displayed this piece on a lucite stand to give it a more instant appeal and it works especially well when it is illuminated. Dimensions; D 8 3/4”Fully marked J Tostrup Norway 1 1/8” tall 12.7 oz About the maker; Around 13 years of age, he worked for a local silversmith. He started as a goldsmith apprentice in Bergen between 1823 and 1828. He then had short stays in St. Petersburg and Copenhagen. He received his journeyman's certificate in 1828. He then moved to Christiania (now Oslo) and acquired burghership in 1832. In 1832, he founded the jewelers firm J. Tostrup, gradually expanding his business with more production equipment and better localities. Tostrup received the title royal court jeweler, and Jacob Tostrup received the Norwegian King's Medal of Merit in gold (Kongens fortjenstmedalje) and was appointed a Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for his work as a goldsmith.
