About the Item

This beautifully crafted grain measure was made in Hindeloopen, the Netherlands, toward the end of the 19th century, around 1890. Originally used as a grain scoop, this container was designed to hold a standardized amount of grain. Made from elm wood and reinforced with steel bands, the scoop’s exterior was skillfully painted in a traditional decorative style, using colors characteristic of the Dutch town of Hindeloopen. The History of Hindeloopen Painting Hindeloopen painting dates back to the late 17th century when Hindeloopen was a thriving trading town. Similar to other prosperous Dutch cities, the wealthier residents often decorated their homes with intricately crafted oak furniture. Some pieces, like sailors' chests, were also painted, possibly inspired by patterns seen during trade voyages to Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The folk art of those regions shares similar motifs, and it’s believed that Hindeloopen designs influenced decorative arts there in return. As oak became scarcer and more expensive, painted furniture became even more common. Pine wood, a cheaper alternative, became popular, and to enhance its appearance, artisans adorned it with detailed paintings. Initially, a limited color palette was used—mainly browns with white accents. By the 18th century, a wider range of colors appeared, resulting in vibrant, richly decorated pieces. Biblical scenes were often depicted, surrounded by intricate decorations of acanthus leaves, flowers, and birds. One bird, likely brought back from voyages to India, became known as a symbol of good luck. This grain measure is in excellent condition and, for the past several decades, has been used as a decorative piece. It is clean, without flaws, and ready for use.
