About the Item
This is a lovely hard-paste porcelain bowl hand-painted at New Hall dating to the very early 19th century, circa 1800.
The New Hall China Manufactory was founded in Shelton, Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire, England.
The decoration is hand-painted in bold enamels in a chinoiserie pattern called "Boy in the Window."
We see a happy family: a boy looking out of a window at his parents and brother as they congregate in the family garden.
The intriguing scene is painted in a range of colors, including green, purple, blue, peach, and orange.
The inside of the bowl has an image of reeds and water in the well, as well as a rim dot and line border in iron red and black along the top edge.
The bowl is well-potted on a low foot.
Dimensions: 6" diameter x 3" tall
Condition: Excellent
Price: $380
Background of New Hall Porcelain: The New Hall China Works was founded in Shelton, Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire, England.
For some 50 years, between 1781 and 1835, the New Hall China Works made porcelain teawares (including bowls) initially of hard paste porcelain (using the patented method bought from Richard Champion).
At a time when tea drinking was all the rage, it is not surprising that much of New Hall's production was tea wares, especially after the government removed the tax on tea in 1784.
Fortunately, the factory's output was mainly for the home market, so the Napoleonic Wars did not significantly impact sales.
However, a lack of managerial continuity during the 1830s finally led to the enterprise's closure in 1835.
