About the Item

A rare and exceptional example of late 19th to early 20th-century Mexican folk metalwork, this antique ceremonial bowl is meticulously handcrafted from solid copper and richly adorned with embossed Aztec warrior and deity motifs. The bowl’s deep, rounded body rests on four conical legs — an uncommon feature compared to the more typical tripod forms — and is fitted with two looped handles at each side, enhancing its sculptural presence. The exterior surface is masterfully decorated with repeated stylized figures that reference the iconography of the Aztec Empire, including headdresses, shields, and ceremonial staffs. These intricate embossed details speak to the artisan's skill and reflect the deep influence of pre-Columbian aesthetics in Mexican craft traditions of the period. The copper surface has developed a beautifully aged, dark brown patina over time, enriched with verdigris oxidation and areas of exposed, burnished copper. The interior of the bowl shows signs of historical use, with natural wear and discoloration that further attest to its authenticity and ceremonial purpose. Originally crafted as a ritual or offering vessel, this piece is not only a functional artifact but also a striking decorative object, ideal for collectors of ethnographic art, Mexican folk art, or antique metalwork. It would make an exceptional statement piece in a curated interior, displayed on a pedestal or console.
